Bosnia: Mostar Minarets

The 28-metre-long and 20-metre-high bridge, listed as a UNESCO world heritage site, was built by the architect Mimar Hajrudin in 1566 of 456 blocks of stone, hundreds of which fell into the river when the bridge was destroyed during war in the 1990s.

The bridge was reopened in 2004, after being rebuilt using the same methods and materials employed nearly 500 years ago. At the opening ceremonies, nine men leapt one by one from the bridge into the rushing waters of the Neretva river below-- reviving an old tradition by which young men prove their bravery. more...
