China: Madrasa Students of Linxia

Chinese Madrasa Students, originally uploaded by themexican.

Linxia is located in the valley of the Daxia River (a right tributary of the Huanghe) southwest of Lanzhou. It is the seat of Linxia Hui Autonomous Prefecture, which is the centre of the ethnic minority of the Dongxiang. Linxia has a Muslim (Hui and Dongxiang) majority . The area has long been the center of the Muslim community of Gansu and is home to the Kadariyah Sufi order. Even today it is sometimes referred to as "the Mecca of China". Islamic cultural influences can be traced back about 1000 years. Mosques are scattered everywhere -- on plains, mountains, valley, river bank -- totaling about 1700 Mosques over 800,000 sq Km. -Wikipedia
